Audiologists: Who we are?

Audiologists are the professionals who specializes in assessing, diagnosing and treating the disorders related to the ear.

An audiologist should have minimum qualification of BASLP (Bachelor in Audiology and Speech Language Pathology) to practice in India. The higher qualifications are M.Sc (Audiology), MASLP & Ph.D. He/She should also be affiliated to the Rehabilitation Council Of India ( RCI ).

What are the disorders related to ear?

Our auditory system is a very complicated array of organs and nerves. There are many disorders in ear that can cause the following conditions:

1. Hearing Loss: The disorders that directly affect the pathway of sound traveling from outer ear to auditory cortex in brain can cause hearing loss. Audiologists perform various tests and manoeuvres to understand the exact cause of the problem and provide a suitable treatment option for same.

2. Tinnitus: Tinnitus can occur with or without hearing loss. The Audiologist will do proper testing and analyse the exact reason for the tinnitus and suggest an appropriate treatment for the tinnitus.

3. Vertigo: Vertigo occurs due to disturbances in the vestibular system that is also associated with the auditory system. Audiologist will help physician to diagnose and rehabilitate the vertigo.

4. Rehabilitation: Audiologists are the only professional who are trained to rehabilitate Hearing Loss through Hearing Aids & Cochlear Implants. They provide auditory training, Auditory Verbal Therapy and helps to facilitate auditory enrichment in different set-ups. They provide Tinnitus Retraining Therapy and other therapies to people suffering from tinnitus. They also provide vestibular rehabilitation through different modalities.
