Living with a cochlear implant can be life-changing, providing a new world of sound and communication. However, to ensure your device continues to work effectively, proper care and maintenance are crucial. Here are some essential tips to help you keep your cochlear implant processor in top condition:

Daily Maintenance

  1. Clean the Microphone Cover: The microphone cover should be replaced every three months or sooner if it appears dirty. This helps to ensure clear sound quality.

  2. Wipe Down the Processor: Before storing your sound processor at night, wipe it down with a microfiber cloth to remove dirt and dust.

  3. Use a Dry and Store Unit: Place your sound processor in a designated drying unit every night to remove any moisture that may have collected during the day. Replace the desiccant every two months.

Battery Care

  1. Check Battery Life: If your battery isn't lasting as expected, it might be time to replace it. Rechargeable batteries typically need replacement once a year or after 364-400 charge cycles.

  2. Use Recommended Batteries: For disposable batteries, use the recommended model (675 or PR44 zinc-air batteries) designed for cochlear implants.

Troubleshooting

  1. Sound Issues: If the sound is muffled, check the microphone cover and replace it if necessary.

  2. Device Not Turning On: If your sound processor won't turn on or turns off suddenly, try using a different battery to see if that resolves the issue.

Regular Check-Ups

  1. Professional Maintenance: Schedule regular check-ups with your audiologist to ensure your device is functioning correctly and to address any concerns you may have.

  2. Stay Informed: Keep up-to-date with any maintenance guidelines provided by your cochlear implant manufacturer.
