Updated: Oct 21, 2022

Diwali is a very beautiful festival. It is a festival of lights and happiness. But due to explosive noise of firecrackers it can be become unsafe for the ears and can cause permanent damage to our hearing.

To keep yourself safe from noise, you follow these simple precautions:

  • Keep your doors and windows closed.

  • Use Hearing Protection devices like earmuffs

For people with hearing loss:

Diwali is the festival of Meeting and Greeting. You meet your relatives and friend and exchange gifts and talk endlessly. To enjoy this festival to the maximum, keep your hearing intact. If you are feeling hearing intact, if you are feeling any of the symptoms recently, meet your audiologist and have a hearing test done.

  • Muffling of speech and other sounds

  • Difficulty understanding words, especially against background noise or in a crowd

  • Trouble hearing consonants

  • Frequently asking others to speak more slowly, clearly and loudly

  • Needing to turn up the volume of the television or radio

  • Withdrawal from conversations

  • Avoidance of some social settings

For people using Hearing Aids:

As hearing aids are amplification devices, there are chances that it may amplify the noises and may not be able to reduce the impulse sound the firecrackers produce.

  1. Ask your audiologist to set a program according to the noisy environment.

  2. If your hearing aids have feature of impulse noise reduction make sure it should be activated.

Hope these steps will help you to enjoy your Diwali to the fullest.

Happy Diwali to all the readers.
